Charleston: Preferred Cruise Lines
Cruise from Charleston South Carolina
South Carolina was created in 1710 when King Charles I divided
the Carolina territory into two states, north and south. The
first permanent English settlement was near Charleston, and the
sub-tropical weather and fertile soil attracted settlers from
many parts of Europe, establishing plantations of rice and
indigo throughout the coastal low country. The plantations
flourished due to slaves brought in from Africa to provide labor
(by 1720 they formed the majority of the population). As a
result, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies in the
New World by the time of the American Revolution. |
